Have Goals? Vision Board Your Way To Success

Every year, on the first Sunday in January, I throw a party. Of course, there’s oodles of cupcakes, bubbly, and fresh flowers. But, the table is also set with baskets of glue sticks and scissors, framed inspirational quotes, stacks of glossy magazines, and at each place setting is an 11 x 14 white foam board. You guessed it – it’s a vision board party!

My 2020 Vision Board

What’s a vision board? Think of it as the illustrated version of your dreams and goals, with some positive words and phrases sprinkled in to amplify its potency. Vision boards are a powerful catalyst for creating the lives we want to live.

The beginning of a new year is a great time for setting intentions and goals and making plans for how we want life to unfold over the next 365 days. But, January isn’t the only time to make a vision board to help clarify and manifest our dreams. Birthdays are another opportunity to think about what the next year means for us, as are periods surrounding major life transitions or particularly challenging seasons. During difficult or uncertain times, visualizing our aspirations can be centering, motivational, and effectual. Research shows that purposeful, vivid visualization sends signals to our brains that activate memory and behavior centers.

The key to vision board success is to meditate and reflect on your creation frequently. Picture yourself living the life you imagine. Journaling our big dreams as though they have already happened (tip from Rachel Hollis) is another thread connecting us to the future we’re creating. Keep your vision board in a place where you’ll see it every day, and remember that effort on our part is also necessary to make our dreams our reality.
